Born 1982 in Sydney Australia Luke Styles moved to the United Kingdom in 2001, to pursue a BMus (composition) degree at the Royal Academy of Music (graduating with honours in 2005), where he studied with Christopher Brown.

Following Lukes studies in the UK he turned to postgraduate study with Detlev Müller-Siemens at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien/Vienna from 2005—2007 and with Wolfgang Rihm at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, Germany from 2006—2008. Luke currently studies with George Benjamin at Kings College London.

Luke has been the recipient of numerous awards and commissions both in the UK and internationally, including, the Wolfgang-Rihm Scholarship from the Privatbrauerei Hoepfner for 2008, the inaugural ACE Scholarship for study with George Benjamin (2008/2009), DAAD scholarship for 06/07, Prize Winner ‘Remasterpiece’ Competition 2006, Commission by the Sonic Arts Network to produce a new work for their annual music festival (2005 in Scarborough), Young Australian Composer of the Asian Composers League (2003), Associate composer of the Australian Music Centre, Mosco Carner Composition Award winner (2001-2003), Lena P Green Award (2004), Pullen Memorial Prize (2005), Moscow International Schnittke composition competition 2nd place winner (2002), 24th International Competition of Electro acoustic Music Russolo finalist (Italy 2002) and Australasian Performing Rights Association Professional Development Award winner.

Luke has taken part in courses such as the 44th International Summer Course for New Music, Darmstadt 2008 (for which he was awarded a full scholarship) and the European Choir forum for Young Composers 2008 (for which he was awarded a full scholarship) where he has received lessons from teachers such as Brian Ferneyhough, Marco Stroppa and Gunnar Eriksson.

Recent performances have taken Luke’s music to London, New York, Vienna, Tokyo, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Sydney, Melbourne, Spain, Russia and Italy, with radio broadcasts in Germany, England and Australia.
