At the start of the new academic year here in the UK, some words on the foyer wall of  ANAM in Melbourne seem appropriate. Re training future musical leaders, the Artistic Director writes - 'Musicians who prod, poke and stir the prevailing musical culture out of its sometimes comfortable slumber; musicians who, through their passionate music making, provoke us, agitate us and compel us to visit places that we had not known existed. Sometimes the most magical places were there all along, but we lacked the inclination or courage to go searching, or the willing guide to take us there.'

As our musical seasons and teaching get underway once more, here's to a great year - and to having the courage, sometimes, to walk off the map.

Here is some timely advice for young musicians, as the BBC Proms celebrates ten years of New Generation Artists. {As a label, it's a lot catchier than Old Generation Artists, or Undiscovered Artists.)

Here is musician Elaine Fine blogging about blogging in the 'classical' music world. Read on to the comments - Michael Monroe , whose MMmusing blog is a must-read, speaks of why we tend not to comment - ' I ... almost didn' t because I figured I didn't have time to craft something that said what I really wanted to say' - true also of discussions.

He goes on to speak of Twitter's greater capacity for 'back and forth' conversations. So - should MusBook discussions take place on Twitter as well?? I'll post this in the Forum and see if anyone has time to craft a reply... :)
