Julia studied for her Bachelor of Music with Honours (Performance) at the Australian National University School of Music with renowned hornist Dominic Harvey. In Canberra she played with Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Stopera, the Canberra Pops Orchestra, the Griffyn Ensemble and the Haydn Bande. She has also appeared with the Australian Ballet, played in Olivia Newton John’s touring orchestra and conducted the National Capital Orchestra.
In 2007 Julia moved to the United Kingdom to study for a Postgraduate Diploma of Music (Performance) at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (renamed Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) with teachers David MacClenaghan and Hugh Potts. After receiving an RSAMD Postgraduate Trust scholarship, Julia studied for her Masters of Music (Performance) this time with David Flack. In Scotland she won an apprenticeship with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, performed with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Scottish Academy Brass at Canterbury Cathedral and for the Queen's entry at the 10th anniversary of Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. She performed the solo horn part of Bach's B Minor Mass with the Dunedin Consort.
After completing her studies Julia relocated to London. There she performed as a freelance horn player with the Bloomsbury Opera, in Cambridge with The Beethoven Ensemble, toured with the Co-Opera Co. and performed regularly with band Happy Penguin Hungry Bear. London also enabled Julia to explore her passion for music education teaching across London and running outreach workshops, her highlight was as the animatrice for the Ashover Festival Kid’s Concert where she had 250 Derbyshire primary school children singing the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Ashover Festival Orchestra.
In Paris Julia has been focusing on improvisation on horn, experiments with ballet music and is discovering French music. Recently she popped back to play with Ruthless Jabiru at the City of London Festival and over the summer she went to Sweden to play chamber music and orchestra at the Aurora Music Festival.
