Mobile Phones: concert demons....

Topics: 9   Posts: 16
I am tempted to say "confiscate mobile phones before a concert", why should others ruin what I pay to go and see?
I went to the last of a season of Charivari Agreable last week, expecting a really good night, but the demon beset the event in more ways than I had realised..... In the first piece I heard talking behind me  and had to put my finger to my lips to silence some young women, tourists, who were texting and reading their texts aloud. I tried to remain calm. I mentioned what had happened in the interval to a ticket seller and was disappointed at the response. However, I was enjoying the music and thought that I had ended the matter.
The second half started well, silence behind me. Then the musicians began to come adrift.  Hmmmmmmm..... I was inevitably distracted from the music to wonder why. Oh well, I thought, we aren`t all perfect on the night and on the whole it was excellent playing.
The concert finished. Lots of applause and the chapel began to empty. Then suddenly someone was shouting! Behind me. A woman was shouting at the  young women who had been talking in the first half. Not just any woman, it was the flautist!  She had been disturbed by an orange light  as they filmed the second half. I was astonished.

Can someone please tell me why oh why something cannot be done about these sorts of people?

Best,sam

It would be a bit Big Brother (I mean in the sense of George Orwell, not the ghastly C4 tv series, now thankfully drawing to its inevitable close) to confiscate people's mobiles as they enter the concert hall - though I too would be in favour of it. A couple of recent concerts have been marred by phones going off, despite the reminders, writ large and loud, from venue staff to switch off one's phone in advance of the performance. And I am sure the noise of a phone is as much a distraction to the musicians as it is to the audience.

On one level, it's downright discourteous, to rest of the audience and the performers, to omit to switch off your phone during a performance. On another level, it's just plain stupid - I mean, it's not that difficult to turn your phone off!

Other offenders are: 'head-conductors', snorers, hummers, opening cough sweets, whispering

Maybe venue staff could fine the offenders after the concert?!

Maybe ban them for life. Like if you cause trouble at a football match ! Of course ASBOs don`t work so they? Zero tolerance would suit me! I actually leave my phone in the car or with someone, because I know there are crazy reasons why it`ll go off even if it`s switched off.
Don`t you think venues are desperate for audiences, though, and don`t care if they are "Proms in the Park" people?

Yes, venues are desperate for audiences and any actions to exclude people will further promote the idea that classical music is elitist.
